Pacific scrap import for Mexican steel
Lázaro Cárdenas, on Mexico’s Pacific coast, is a steel port: an integrated works and a DRI-based mill sit beside it, and the port handles bulk scrap imports from the United States and Asia for the Michoacán and central Mexican mills. Mexico’s steel industry is largely EAF and DRI based and imports scrap from the US by rail and road as well as by sea.
The port’s container terminal also handles non-ferrous scrap for the metal processors of central Mexico.
