Ship Recycling — Where End-of-Life Vessels Become Melting Scrap
A merchant ship is, among other things, twenty to forty thousand tonnes of steel arranged in the shape of a hull. When that hull reaches the end of its working life, the steel returns to the melting furnace. Ship recycling is one of the largest single sources of heavy melting scrap in the world, and it has its own yards, its own pricing unit, and its own body of international law.

Why a Ship Is Scrapped
Ships are not usually recycled because they have stopped working. They are recycled because the economics of keeping them running have turned. Classification societies require special surveys at intervals, typically every five years, and the cost of passing one rises steeply as a vessel ages. Fuel efficiency falls behind newer designs. Charterers begin to prefer younger tonnage. Emissions and ballast water rules add capital cost to older hulls.
When the survey bill, the repair list and the weak freight market arrive together, the owner compares the cost of another five years against what the vessel is worth as steel — and the steel wins. Freight rates therefore drive the recycling market inversely: strong markets keep old ships trading, weak markets send them to the beach.
The typical merchant vessel is recycled somewhere between twenty and thirty years of age, though the range is wide. Tankers tend to go earlier than bulk carriers, and specialised tonnage can outlive both.
Where Ships Are Recycled
The great majority of the world's end-of-life tonnage is recycled in five places. Each has its own method, its own steel market behind it, and its own regulatory position.
🇮🇳 Alang, India
The largest ship recycling location in the world, on the Gujarat coast at the head of the Gulf of Khambhat, where an exceptional tidal range lets vessels be driven high onto the beach. Alang has moved substantially toward certified yards under international standards, and the plate and heavy sections it produces feed re-rolling mills and furnaces across Gujarat.
🇧🇩 Chittagong, Bangladesh
The Sitakunda coast north of Chittagong takes some of the heaviest tonnage in the trade. Ship steel is the primary raw material of the Bangladeshi steel industry — a country with almost no iron ore and very little domestic scrap arising, where re-rolling mills depend on ship plate to a degree seen almost nowhere else.
🇵🇰 Gadani, Pakistan
A long beach west of Karachi on the Balochistan coast, and historically one of the largest yards anywhere. Activity at Gadani rises and falls with import policy and the health of Pakistan's re-rolling sector, but its plate remains a significant input to the country's steel supply.
🇹🇷 Aliağa, Turkey
North of İzmir on the Aegean coast, and the principal recycling centre in Europe's neighbourhood. Aliağa works alongside a cluster of electric arc furnace mills that melt the material directly, which makes Turkey unusual: the ship, the yard and the furnace are within a few kilometres of each other. 🇨🇳 China and others
China operated large pier-side recycling facilities and closed them to foreign-flagged vessels in the late 2010s, retaining domestic capacity. Smaller volumes are recycled in Europe, the United States — where naval and government vessels follow their own disposal route — and at scattered yards elsewhere.
LDT — How a Ship Is Priced
Ships for recycling are not sold by displacement or deadweight. They are sold by light displacement tonnage, universally shortened to LDT: the weight of the vessel itself, empty — hull, machinery, fittings and equipment, with no cargo, fuel, ballast or stores aboard. LDT is the closest available measure of how much material the buyer will actually recover, and it appears on the vessel's stability documentation.
Prices are quoted in US dollars per LDT. A capesize bulk carrier might present twenty thousand LDT or more; a small general cargo ship a few thousand. The quoted figure moves with local steel plate prices, currency, import duty, yard capacity and the season — monsoon months slow beaching work in South Asia — and the spread between competing destinations is watched closely by owners deciding where to send a vessel.
Not all LDT is equal. A vessel with more machinery, more copper cabling and more non-ferrous fittings is worth more per tonne than a bare hull, and buyers adjust their offers accordingly.
What Comes Out of a Ship
A vessel is not a single grade of scrap. Dismantling separates a range of materials, each with its own destination.
⚙️ Ship plate
The largest share by weight. Hull and deck plate cut into manageable sizes. Thicker sections are often re-rolled directly into bar rather than melted, which is why ship plate supports re-rolling mills as well as furnaces. Plate that is too distorted or too thin for re-rolling goes to the melt as heavy melting steel.
⚙️ Heavy sections and machinery
Engine blocks, shafting, propeller bossing, frames and structural steel. Dense, clean, furnace-ready material — closely comparable to the HMS 1 category described in the heavy melting scrap guide.
🟠 Copper
Cabling runs through every part of a ship, and the electrical rooms, motors and generators add more. Copper is among the most valuable non-ferrous recoveries from a vessel and a significant part of the buyer's calculation.
🟡 Brass and bronze
Valves, fittings, bearings, portholes and propellers. Ships' propellers are commonly manganese bronze or nickel-aluminium bronze, and a large propeller is a substantial piece of non-ferrous metal in its own right.
⚪ Aluminium
Superstructure panels on some designs, accommodation fittings, and equipment housings. Modern vessels with aluminium deckhouses yield more than older all-steel designs.
✨ Stainless steel
Galley equipment, tank fittings, pipework and, on chemical tankers, cargo tanks and lines built entirely of stainless — which can make such a vessel disproportionately valuable at the end of its life.
📦 Reusable equipment
Not everything is melted. Generators, pumps, winches, anchors, chain, navigation equipment, furniture and joinery are removed intact and resold. The second-hand marine equipment markets around Alang and Chittagong are substantial trades in themselves.
⚠️ Hazardous materials
Asbestos insulation on older vessels, PCBs, residual oils and sludges, batteries, paint containing heavy metals, and refrigerant gases. These must be identified, removed and disposed of separately — the central concern of the regulations described below.
How a Ship Is Sold
Very few owners sell a vessel directly to a recycling yard. The trade runs through intermediaries known as cash buyers, who purchase the ship outright from the owner, take delivery, and resell it to a yard. The owner receives a clean sale and a single payment; the cash buyer carries the risk of the delivery voyage, the currency, the local market and the yard's performance.
The vessel is usually sold on an "as is, where is" basis at an agreed delivery point, with enough bunkers aboard for the final voyage. Sale terms reference the LDT figure, the delivery range and the condition of the vessel. Government and naval vessels follow a different path — they are typically disposed of by formal tender through the state's official auction platform, as described on the World Tenders page.
The Legal Framework
Three regimes govern the movement and dismantling of end-of-life ships. They overlap, and which applies depends on the flag of the vessel, the country it sails from, and the country it is recycled in.
Hong Kong Convention
The IMO's Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, adopted in 2009, entered into force in June 2025. It requires vessels to carry an Inventory of Hazardous Materials, and requires recycling facilities to hold an authorisation and operate to an approved ship recycling plan. Its entry into force is the most significant change the trade has seen, and the major recycling states have been working toward compliance.
Basel Convention
Governs the transboundary movement of hazardous waste. Because an end-of-life ship contains hazardous materials, it can fall within Basel's scope, and the relationship between Basel and the Hong Kong Convention has been debated for years. The practical effect is that vessels leaving certain jurisdictions face additional consent requirements.
EU Ship Recycling Regulation
EU-flagged vessels must be recycled at a facility on the European List of approved ship recycling facilities. The list includes yards inside the EU, in Turkey, and a number that have been added in India as those yards achieved the required standards. The regulation also requires the Inventory of Hazardous Materials for vessels calling at EU ports, regardless of flag.
Why It Matters to the Scrap Trade
Ship recycling is not a side note to the melting scrap business. For Bangladesh and Pakistan it is the foundation of domestic steel supply. For India it is a major regional source feeding the Gujarat mills. For Turkey it sits directly alongside the electric arc furnaces that consume it.
It also behaves differently from ordinary scrap collection. Ordinary arisings respond to consumption and demolition years earlier; ship recycling responds to the freight market, and a downturn in shipping can put a large volume of heavy steel onto the market within months. Traders in HMS watch demolition prices for that reason — they are one of the leading indicators of ferrous supply in the Indian Ocean region.
