Europe’s largest scrap export port
Europe’s largest scrap export port
Rotterdam is the gateway through which much of north-west Europe’s ferrous scrap leaves for Turkey, the Mediterranean and Asia. Scrap terminals in the Botlek, Waalhaven and Maasvlakte areas receive material by barge from the Rhine and by road and rail from the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium, store it in grade-segregated stockpiles and load bulk carriers with grab cranes. Deep water means vessels of 40,000 tonnes and more can be loaded for the Turkish Marmara and Aegean mills in a single call.
The port is equally important for non-ferrous and containerised scrap. Copper, aluminium, brass and stainless move through the container terminals of Maasvlakte to India, China and South-East Asia, and the surrounding region holds many of the Netherlands’ shredder plants and non-ferrous processors. Rotterdam is also where European scrap export rules bite first: pre-shipment inspection, radiation screening and waste-shipment paperwork are all routine here.
