Transhipment hub and regional trading centre
Singapore is less a scrap port than a scrap market. The world’s busiest transhipment port moves containerised scrap between Australia, Japan, the United States and the importers of South and South-East Asia, and the trading houses and shipping desks that finance the regional trade sit in the city. Singapore’s own EAF steelworks and its ship-repair and offshore industries generate scrap that is processed locally and exported.
The Jurong and Tuas industrial areas hold the city-state’s scrap processors and its steel mill; Singapore does not accept imported e-waste or mixed scrap for processing except under licence.
