Sohar in the scrap trade

Mill-side scrap import

Sohar Port and Freezone was built as an industrial port, and its steel and aluminium plants make it a destination for scrap rather than a source. The electric-furnace steelworks and the direct-reduction plant beside the port take imported ferrous scrap, and the aluminium smelter in the zone anchors a cluster of downstream processors.

Scrap arrives in bulk and in containers from the Gulf, India and East Africa, and Sohar’s position outside the Strait of Hormuz makes it a convenient call for vessels avoiding the Gulf.
