Balers compress light sheet, car bodies, cans and non-ferrous scrap into dense bundles that can be stacked, shipped and charged into a furnace. They turn the cheapest, bulkiest scrap into a saleable, transportable product.

A baler is a hydraulic box with one, two or three rams that compress loose scrap from the sides and the top into a rectangular bale. Two-ram and three-ram balers make the dense, square bundles that mills and exporters want; single-ram and “logger” balers make a looser log for further shearing. Car-body balers take a whole flattened car and press it into a block for shipment to a shredder.
Bale density, measured as the weight of a bale of given size, is the quality measure — a dense bale charges better and hides less air, dirt and water. Balers are rated by chamber size, ram force and bales per hour.
Exporters bale sheet into No. 1 and No. 2 bundles and bale UBC and tin cans to the density mills specify. Non-ferrous processors bale copper wire, aluminium sheet and extrusions for container shipment. Dismantlers bale car bodies for transport to shredders. In India and South-East Asia, balers are the entry-level investment for a yard moving from loose to graded sales.
The large shear makers also build balers, and several specialists focus on balers and loggers. Chinese makers in Jiangsu and Zhejiang export balers across Asia and Africa; Indian makers supply the domestic market.
