Types of shear

Shears cut heavy scrap — beams, plate, ship sections, pipe, car bodies — to furnace size. From the small alligator shear on a yard floor to the mobile and stationary guillotine shears that process hundreds of tonnes a day, they are the basic tool of the ferrous trade.

The alligator shear is the simplest: a hydraulic jaw that closes on a bar, pipe or small section, used in every small yard for cutting non-ferrous and light ferrous. The stationary guillotine (or “gantry”) shear is the heavy machine of the trade — a hydraulic box that compresses a charge of mixed heavy scrap and then drops a blade through it, producing HMS and P&S from demolition steel, ship plate and structures. Mobile shears, mounted on tracks or trailers, do the same work on site at demolition and dismantling jobs. Container shears, popular with Chinese makers, are built into a container-sized frame for easy shipment and setup.

Inclined shears, a speciality of some Italian makers, feed by gravity and suit yards with less space. Shear-balers combine a baling press with a shear so that light and heavy material can be handled on one machine.

Choosing a shear

Cutting force (from 300 to over 2,000 tonnes), box length and the number of cuts per hour decide throughput; the blade steel and the hydraulic system decide running cost. For export yards making HMS to the ReMA sizes, the box dimensions must match the maximum piece size the buyer accepts.

Who makes them

Europe’s long-established makers in Italy, Germany, France, Belgium and Spain build the heavy stationary machines; American makers serve the US market; Chinese makers in Jiangsu export container and gantry shears to India, the Middle East and Africa at lower cost; Indian makers build alligator and smaller gantry shears for the domestic trade.
