Antwerp in the scrap trade

Scrap terminals and the Hoboken copper and precious-metal smelter

Antwerp handles scrap in both directions. Belgian and northern French ferrous scrap is loaded in bulk for Turkey and Egypt from terminals on the Scheldt, and the port’s container terminals ship copper, brass and aluminium scrap to Asia. Barge connections to the Walloon steel belt and to the Rhine give it a wide hinterland.

The city is also home, at Hoboken, to one of the world’s largest recycling smelters for copper-bearing and precious-metal scrap β€” e-waste, printed circuit boards, catalytic converters and complex residues arrive from across the world. That makes Antwerp a destination port for high-value scrap as well as an export port for bulk steel.
