Scrap import for southern Vietnam’s mills
Scrap import for southern Vietnam’s mills
The deep-water terminals at Cai Mep–Thi Vai, downstream of Ho Chi Minh City, and the river ports of Saigon take the imported scrap on which southern Vietnam’s EAF mills run. The Phu My industrial zone beside Cai Mep contains several large electric-furnace steelworks that discharge bulk cargoes from the United States, Japan and Australia at their own berths.
Vietnam is one of the largest scrap importers in Asia, and its rules on scrap imports — licensing of importers, inspection and environmental conditions — are applied at these ports. Non-ferrous scrap for the processors around Ho Chi Minh City enters in containers.
