Scrap import and the Sitakunda ship-recycling coast

Chattogram is Bangladesh’s main port and the entry point for almost all of the country’s imported scrap. Bangladesh has little iron ore and no primary steel; its electric-furnace and induction mills run on scrap and on the plate cut from ships on the Sitakunda beaches north of the city. Imported HMS and shredded arrive in bulk and in containers from the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, Japan and the Gulf.

The port is congested and draught-limited, so larger bulk cargoes are often lightened or split, and container imports carry a large share. Ship recycling at Sitakunda supplies the re-rolling mills directly, making the Chattogram region one of the most concentrated scrap-to-steel economies in the world.
