Bangladesh in the Global Melting Scrap Trade

Bangladesh's steel industry runs almost entirely on recycled material — induction and electric arc furnaces melting a mix of imported ferrous scrap and steel recovered from the famous shipbreaking yards along the coast at Sitakunda near Chattogram. The country imports millions of tonnes of HMS and shredded scrap every year.

Chattogram is the industry's heartland, home to BSRM — the country's largest producer — along with Abul Khair Steel, KSRM, GPH Ispat with its Quantum electric arc furnace, and the PHP group. Several producers are listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange, and the sector is organised under the Bangladesh Steel Manufacturers Association.
