Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest scrap port
Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest scrap port
Durban is the busiest port in sub-Saharan Africa and the main export point for South African scrap. The country’s policy on scrap exports has swung between restriction and permit regimes to protect its own mills, so Durban’s shipments — bulk ferrous to Asia, containers of copper, aluminium and stainless to India and the Far East — depend on the permits of the moment. Our South Africa page follows the rules.
Durban also imports scrap for the KwaZulu-Natal mills and serves as a gateway for scrap from Zimbabwe, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo moving to the coast.
