21 named firms across 4 scrap hubs — Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Vanderbijlpark
South Africa has the most developed metals recycling industry on the continent, with century-old processors in Cape Town and Johannesburg feeding domestic mills and the export trade. Scrap export policy — permits and pricing rules — is a recurring theme for the sector.
The melt side spans carbon steel in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, stainless at Middelburg, and aluminium rolling and alloying that runs substantially on recycled feed.
The exchanges and price services the trade in South Africa quotes against. Scrap is priced as a discount to these.
A firm that handles several metals appears under each.
