Hamburg in the scrap trade

Deep-water scrap export and the Aurubis copper works

Hamburg’s scrap trade rests on two pillars. On the Elbe, bulk terminals load German and Scandinavian ferrous scrap for Turkey and the Mediterranean, drawing material from the German shredder network by rail, road and inland barge. The port also ships containerised non-ferrous scrap to Asia through its box terminals.

Second, Hamburg is where Europe’s largest copper producer refines both concentrate and scrap. Copper scrap, blister and anode material arrive by sea and road for the works on the Peute, and the surrounding region has a dense network of non-ferrous dealers feeding it. An electric-arc steelworks on the Elbe is a local consumer of ferrous scrap landed at the port.
