Free-zone scrap trading and transhipment
Jebel Ali is the largest port in the Middle East and its free zone is a trading floor for scrap. Yards inside the zone receive ferrous and non-ferrous scrap from the Gulf states, East Africa and Central Asia, sort and containerise it, and ship it on to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Far East. Much Gulf scrap passes through here on paper if not in fact, and the UAEβs own steel mills and the Dubai aluminium smelter draw from the same pool.
The portβs container connections to every Indian port make it the natural assembly point for small Gulf lots, and Dubaiβs trading houses finance a large share of the Middle East scrap trade from offices beside the zone.
