Japan’s largest scrap export base
Japan’s largest scrap export base
Tokyo Bay — the Keihin ports of Tokyo, Kawasaki and Yokohama — is the centre of Japan’s scrap export trade. The capital region generates a large surplus of obsolete steel, and dealers’ export yards on the bay load coastal bulk vessels of 3,000 to 10,000 tonnes for South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, Bangladesh and the Philippines. Japanese H2 grade and shredded are the standard cargoes.
Tokyo Bay is also home to a large EAF steelmaker and to the dealers whose monthly export tenders set the Japanese export price. Non-ferrous and stainless scrap leave in containers from Tokyo and Yokohama for China, South Korea and South-East Asia.
