Nickel-based and cobalt-based alloys are used where ordinary stainless cannot survive: gas-turbine blades and discs, chemical-plant vessels, exhaust manifolds of aero engines, marine condensers in cupronickel, and electroplating anodes. Scrap of these alloys is worth many times stainless, but only if the exact alloy is known, because remelters buy to a chemistry and a mixed lot is worth only its lowest component.
Every piece is analysed; XRF and LIBS guns are standard, and remelters check by spectrometer. Common families are Inconel (nickel–chromium), Monel (nickel–copper), Hastelloy (nickel–molybdenum), cupronickel 90/10 and 70/30, and pure nickel.
Specialist processors in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Japan sort and sell to superalloy remelters and to stainless mills for nickel units. India, South Korea and China import nickel alloy scrap for stainless and alloy production. Aerospace scrap can be subject to export controls and to chain-of-custody requirements.
