India in the Global Melting Scrap Trade

India has a long tradition in metals manufacturing and recycling. The country supports steel, copper, aluminium, zinc, and stainless steel industries, with both publicly listed companies and a wider base of private operators.

Steel is produced across the country by integrated mills and electric arc furnace plants. India also supports integrated copper and aluminium producers, dedicated zinc smelters, and stainless steel manufacturers, alongside a large secondary sector of recyclers, traders, and small foundries concentrated in clusters such as Jamnagar, Mandi Gobindgarh, and Raipur.

The Material Recycling Association of India (MRAI) is the industry body for the recycling sector and is affiliated with the Bureau of International Recycling. Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) registration, pre-shipment inspection requirements, and the Hazardous and Other Wastes Rules apply to inbound non-ferrous melting scrap shipments.
