The Marmara region around Istanbul, İzmit and Gebze is Turkey’s densest steel-making area, and its scrap arrives through Ambarlı and the mill jetties along the İzmit Gulf. Bulk carriers from the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom and the Baltic discharge HMS and shredded that go by truck to the EAF mills within a few hours’ drive.
Marmara’s purchases are the largest component of the Turkish import price, and the terminals here are where most of the pre-shipment-inspected cargoes from Europe end up. Our Istanbul and İzmit pages cover the mills and traders.
