About Brass Melting Scrap
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, and brass mills are among the most recycling-intensive metal producers anywhere — a large share of the feed for brass rod and tube production is scrap returned from machining shops, plumbing and valve manufacturing, ammunition plants, and demolition.
Because the alloy already contains the right metals in roughly the right ratio, clean segregated brass scrap commands strong prices relative to the contained copper and zinc. Mills pay close attention to alloy family — yellow brass, red brass (which carries tin and lead), and special alloys are melted separately.
The world’s brass industry is clustered: Jamnagar in India, Brescia in Italy, the German mills around Ulm and Osnabrück, Japanese rod makers, Korea’s Poongsan, and the large Chinese processors in Zhejiang.
Principal Grades
Yellow brass solids — the workhorse grade (known in the ReMA specifications by the code word Honey): clean yellow brass castings, rod ends, valves, and fittings free of iron and foreign material.
Yellow brass turnings — machining swarf from screw-machine and component shops; sold dry and free of oil where possible, as moisture and cutting fluid attract deductions.
Red brass and composition scrap — copper-tin-zinc-lead alloys from plumbing fittings and bearings, melted separately from yellow brass.
