What it is

Swarf from machining brass fittings and rod, plus low-grade mixed brass for the refinery — sold on assay and processed before melting.

Brass fittings, valves and components are machined from rod and castings, and the shops that do it generate large tonnages of turnings. Night is the grade for yellow brass turnings, free of aluminium, manganese and composition turnings. Ivory covers yellow brass castings, and Pales is “refinery brass” — mixed or contaminated brass with a lower copper content that goes to a secondary smelter for refining rather than to a brass mill.

Turnings carry cutting oil and fines and have a low bulk density, so they are centrifuged and often briquetted before shipment.

Trade

The machining clusters of Jamnagar in India, the Pearl River Delta in China and northern Italy both produce and consume brass turnings. Internationally the material travels in containers; assay on arrival settles the price, with copper content and lead content the deciding numbers.
