Red brass, also called composition or gunmetal, is an alloy of copper with tin, zinc and lead, typically around 85 per cent copper. It is the material of cast valve bodies, pump impellers, water-meter housings, bearings and bells. Ebony is the scrap grade for these castings and clean heavy pieces; it excludes railroad car boxes and other high-lead bronzes, cocks and faucets (which have their own grade), and aluminium or manganese bronze.
Because its copper content is higher than yellow brass, red brass sells above Honey, and because it already carries tin it is valued by bronze foundries that would otherwise have to buy tin.
Bronze and brass foundries, bearing makers and ingot makers are the buyers. India, China, Italy, Germany and the United States all have active markets. Yards keep red brass apart from yellow brass because mixing the two spoils the value of both.
