Light copper is unalloyed copper that is too thin or too contaminated for the solid grades: roofing and gutter sheet, boiler bodies, kettles, wash-pots and thin clippings, often coated in paint, oxide or solder. The ReMA Dream grade sets a nominal copper content and excludes burnt hair wire and heavily leaded material.
Copper-brass radiators from cars, trucks and industrial coolers are their own grade: copper tube and fins joined to brass tanks with solder. They are sold either whole or with the steel and aluminium parts removed, and the price follows an assumed copper and brass content.
Both grades go to secondary smelters and refiners, with India, China, South Korea and the European refineries as the main buyers. Radiators with aluminium fins, now common in modern vehicles, are a separate aluminium-copper radiator grade that is processed by shredding and separating rather than smelting whole.
