Zamak and similar zinc–aluminium die-casting alloys are used wherever a cheap, accurately cast part is needed: automotive door handles and locks, carburettors, appliance parts, hardware, model toys and plated bathroom fittings. Scope is new die-cast scrap from the casting plants — gates, runners and rejects of known alloy. Saves is old die cast from dismantling, often chrome-plated and with steel inserts.
Zinc die cast is distinguished from aluminium by its weight and its dull fracture, and by XRF at the sorting line.
Die-casters and secondary zinc refiners buy both grades; new die cast goes straight back into alloy, while old plated castings are refined. The United States, Europe, India, China and South Korea all trade the material, with China and India the main importers. Price follows the LME zinc price with a discount for plating and inserts.
