Thames deep-sea scrap export berths
Tilbury, on the Thames estuary east of London, is the United Kingdom’s principal deep-sea scrap export terminal. London and south-east England generate a large surplus of ferrous scrap that no local mill can absorb, and Tilbury’s river berths load it in bulk for Turkey, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt and India. Shredded and HMS are stockpiled on the quay and loaded by crane; the largest UK scrap exporters operate their own facilities here.
Because the UK exports most of the scrap it collects, Tilbury’s loading rate is a barometer of the whole UK trade, and the port’s shipments appear in the weekly Turkish import statistics almost as soon as they sail.
