Worn-out railway track and rail crops — a dense, high-carbon grade that is sold as melting scrap or, at full lengths, as re-rollable material for small sections.
Railways replace rail as it wears, and the released rail is one of the cleanest ferrous grades in existence: a single known steel, no coating and no attachments once the fishplates and fastenings are removed. Rail is high in carbon and manganese, so it is handled as a distinct grade rather than mixed into HMS.
Rail is sold either cut to furnace lengths as melting scrap or as whole rails for re-rolling, where mills in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and elsewhere roll the rails directly into small bars, angles and flats. Crane rails, tram rails and rail-wheel scrap are related grades.
Railway operators sell by tender, which is why rail scrap appears on the tender portals listed on our tenders page. Exported rail moves in bulk and in containers. Buyers check for welded sections, alloy heads, and the presence of fittings that would add non-ferrous metal to the heat.
