Chennai Port and the newer Kamarajar Port at Ennore serve the steel, foundry and non-ferrous industries of Tamil Nadu. Containerised scrap from the Gulf, Australia, the United States and South-East Asia is cleared at Chennai for the induction-furnace mills around the city, the Coimbatore foundry cluster and the stainless and copper processors of the south.

Ennore handles bulk cargoes and has steel and energy plants beside it; together the two ports give southern India its own scrap gateway, independent of the Gujarat and Maharashtra ports in the west.
