Gulf Coast scrap export
Gulf Coast scrap export
Houston and the Texas Gulf ports are the loading points for scrap from the US south and south-west. Bulk ferrous scrap sails from Houston, Brownsville and Mobile for Turkey, Mexico and Central America, and the port’s container terminals ship non-ferrous scrap to Asia and Latin America. The Gulf’s mills — EAF plants in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas — compete with the export trade for the same scrap.
Houston’s position gives it a shorter voyage to Turkey than the West Coast and a direct route to Mexico’s growing steel industry.
