What it is

The aluminium fraction separated out of Zorba by sink-float or sensor sorting — a mixed cast-and-wrought aluminium that secondary smelters can melt directly.

Twitch is what remains when the heavy metals have been removed from Zorba. It is a mix of shredded cast and wrought aluminium pieces, with the copper, brass, zinc and stainless largely gone, and it is sold on a stated metal content, usually above 95 per cent aluminium. Heavy-media (sink-float) plants, X-ray transmission sorters and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy sorters all produce it, and the more advanced plants go further and separate cast from wrought.

Twitch is the practical form in which shredder aluminium reaches the smelter, and its quality depends entirely on how thoroughly the sorter has worked.

Trade

Secondary smelters in the United States, Europe, Japan, South Korea, India and South-East Asia buy Twitch for casting alloys. Its price follows Tense and the exchange price for aluminium. As more sorting capacity is built in the exporting countries, Twitch is increasingly consumed at home rather than exported.
