What it is

Old aluminium sheet — siding, gutters, cookware, signs, window frames stripped of screws — clean of steel, plastic and paint build-up, and the standard mixed wrought grade of the secondary trade.

Taint/Tabor is clean, mixed old-alloy wrought aluminium: sheet and extrusion pieces of unknown but mainly wrought alloys, free of foil, venetian blinds, castings, hair wire, screen wire, food or beverage containers and radiator shells. It is the grade a yard reaches for when the material is obviously aluminium, obviously wrought, and clean enough to melt without pre-treatment.

The ReMA specification tolerates paint and small amounts of oxide but not steel attachments, plastic, dirt or heavy coating. Yards magnet-check every lot and cut off screws, hinges and rivets.

Trade and buyers

Secondary aluminium smelters making deoxidation ingot and casting alloys are the buyers, along with some extrusion remelters. The export trade flows from the US and Europe to India, which has become one of the largest importers of aluminium scrap, and to Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea, Pakistan and China. Price is quoted as a discount to the exchange aluminium price.
