What it is

Engine parts, gearbox housings, wheels of unknown alloy, cookware castings and die-cast parts — silicon-rich cast aluminium that goes back into casting alloy.

Tense is clean mixed aluminium castings: cylinder heads, transmission and gearbox housings, pump bodies, die-cast parts and other items of cast origin, free of steel inserts, brass bushings, dirt, oil and grease above a tolerated level. Cast aluminium contains silicon and often copper, so it cannot go into wrought products but is ideal feed for the secondary smelters that make casting alloys for automotive foundries.

Yards separate castings from wrought sheet by appearance and by breaking a sample: cast metal fractures with a granular face while sheet bends.

Trade

The auto-dismantling industries of North America, Europe and Japan are the main sources. Buyers are the secondary alloy producers in India, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, South Korea and Europe. Steel inserts — valve seats, studs, bearing races — are the main deduction because they contaminate the melt and reduce yield.
