What it is

Window and door frames, curtain-wall sections and extrusion-plant offcuts in the 6063 alloy — a known single alloy that remelters can turn straight back into billet.

Most architectural aluminium — window frames, doors, railings, shopfronts — is extruded from alloy 6063, and that makes extrusion scrap one of the most valuable wrought grades. New extrusion scrap (press offcuts, butt ends, cut-offs) is the top of the grade; old extrusions from demolition follow, sold as painted or unpainted, with thermal-break plastic, glass, steel screws and rubber seals removed.

Because the alloy is known, the metal can be remelted into extrusion billet with little dilution by primary aluminium, which is why extrusion plants and billet casters pay a premium over mixed sheet.

Trade

Extrusion scrap trades within every producing country and in containers to India, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea and China. Chinese import rules for recycled wrought aluminium are easier to meet with single-alloy extrusions than with mixed scrap. Anodised and powder-coated material is accepted but priced lower than mill-finish.
