Malaysia has an established metals trading and recycling base. The country's ports — including Port Klang and Penang — and several free trade zones support the movement of material. Pasir Gudang in Johor also handles material in the southern region.
Since 2018, recyclers must hold valid Approved Permits and certification from the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) to import scrap. A number of Malaysian metals producers are listed on Bursa Malaysia.
The Malaysian Recyclers Association is the industry coordinating body, working with the Ministry of International Trade and Industry and SIRIM.
